Right to self-determination is one of the fundamental rights of Indigenous Peoples. This right has been guaranteed in International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) including in Un Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The Right to self-determination for indigenous peoples simply means the right or freedom to determine on any matter that is going to affect them or it is the freedom to determine their own social life. But lately this right has been really debatable among scholars. therefore, in this episode, i have talked with Gam Shimray, Secretary General of Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), an umbrella Organization of Indigenous Peoples Organization in Asia, i have discussed with him mainly, what is Right to self-determination meant for Indigenous Peoples? Why Indigenous Peoples in Asia are struggling for realizing this particular right to self-determination.
